Conference: Second Wave of Modernism in Landscape Architecture in America (November 13-15, 2008 in Chicago)

Marta Fry

Ms. Fry is principal of the MFLA Studio ,a San Francisco-based urban design and landscape architecture studio established in 1990.  Her design philosophy is founded on  an intellectual curiosity in the exploration of new expressions for landscape design. A graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Design , her projects have been executed internationally, domestically and regionally, and include urban design, infill and redevelopment sites, parks, historic restoration, streetscapes, resort and hospitality development, multi-family housing, master planning, corporate and institutional campuses, and agricultural and estate garden design.  Believing that the landscape is one of the most potent and lasting forms of cultural expression, Marta Fry leads the Studio in the exploration of the intersections and complex relationships between environmental, social and cultural systems over time, aiming to reveal and express these relationships in forms that enable vital understandings, explorations and re-connections to place.

Projects include San Francisco’s GGNRA national park re-use at the Fort Baker Waterfront and  the three mile Presidio Coastal Trail linking the Golden Gate Bridge to Baker Beach,  the re-development of Mission Bay at Mission Creek Park North, and the re-imaging of mid-century iconic projects such as the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles, the Transamerica Pyramid Plaza and  associated Redwood Park, and The Gateway and Sydney Waldon Square  in San Francisco.
