Dr. Safei-Eldin Hamed 

Safei Hamed is a scholar of environmental planning, an educator of landscape architecture, and a consultant of international development, currently serving as Program Director for the Landscape Architecture program at Chatham University, Pittsburgh PA.   He has taught at the University of Guelph and The University of Nova Scotia in Canada; King Faisal University in Saudi Arabia; and the University of Georgia, Virginia Tech, the University of Maryland, and Texas Tech University in the United States.  He has been invited to lecture in different universities around the world including: Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, Berkeley, DePaul, Cairo, and Saudi Arabia.

Professor Hamed has served as a consultant for organizations including: the State Department, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Fish and Wildlife Service, Agency for International Development, the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies, the Smithsonian Institute, the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.  Between 1994 and 1997, he worked as an environmental Impacts Specialist at the World Bank in Washington, DC.

Dr. Hamed has authored and/or co-authored eight books and more than fifty chapters, articles, papers, and reports on topics like: environmentally and socially sustainable development, tourism planning, national environmental strategies, architecture and landscape design in the arid regions, Islamic gardens, and environmental ethics in Islam.   He holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Planning from Virginia Tech, a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Georgia, and a Bachelor of Architecture from Cairo University.
