What鈥檚 Out There Weekend, scheduled for October 25 & 26, featured free, expert-led tours at more than two-dozen significant examples of designed landscapes in and around Richmond. The Richmond-area's rich legacy includes antebellum plantations and gardens, Colonial Revival properties, remarkable post-industrial parkland integrated with the James River, and significant Modernist plazas and public spaces.

The What鈥檚 Out There Weekend program dovetails with the Web-based What鈥檚 Out There, the nation鈥檚 most comprehensive searchable database of historic designed landscapes. The database currently features more than 1,700 sites, 10,000 images and 900 designer profiles. And, What's Out There is optimized for iPhones and similar handheld devices, and includes What's Nearby - a GPS-enabled function that locates all landscapes in the database within a 25-mile radius of any given location. What鈥檚 Out There Weekend tours provide fascinating insights about city shaping, landscape architecture, and the design history of places that people may pass every day but don鈥檛 necessarily know about.
