Second Wave of Modernism II: Landscape Complexity and Transformation
Friday November 18, 2011 (8:00am-4:30pm)
Conference
In recent years there has been an accelerating attitudinal shift: a departure away from the modernist鈥檚 tabula rasa exemplified at varying scales by icons such as Philip Johnson鈥檚 Beck House in Dallas and the Lincoln Center Campus in New York. Today designers are returning to modernist sites with new motivations, attempting to balance the complex values of natural and cultural systems.
To investigate this significant evolution of professional practice, three groups of thematic presentations have been assembled that will collectively explore landscape transformations at residential, urban and metropolitan scales. The conference follows and continues dialogue initiated at the sold-out first conference convened in Chicago in 2008.
LACES Continuing Education Units (CEUs) will be available.

East River Boat Tour
This 4-hour tour showcases three recent award-winning parks along the East River and Red Hook waterfronts of New York City: Erie Basin Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and Queens West Stage 2. Attendees will disembark at each of the parks, where the New York Landscape Architects responsible for the planning and design of each park will provide in-depth, personal knowledge of the behind-the-scenes design and construction processes.
9/11 Memorial, Former World Trade Center Complex
Design Team: Michael Arad; PWP Landscape Architecture
The 90-minute tour will begin on an upper floor of 7 World Trade Center with an introduction to the memorial design process and continue at ground level, where participants will gain an intimate perspective into the well-considered construction details and complex coordination required to develop the multi-layered and culturally sensitive project.
