Colonial Garden
Early American gardens greatly influenced by European precedents particularly British, French, Spanish and Italian. Colonists during the eigtheenth and nineteenth centuries created agricultural grounds for human sustenance that often were complemented by both ornamental and kitchen gardens, with features of the prevailing styles of their homeland. Using indigenous plants and materials and typically of simple craftsmanship, unique regional styles evolved to respond to local requirements. Commonly accessible by both land and water, the gardens and primary fa莽ade were oriented to the primary mode of access, most often the water, leaving the road to the rear.
